Beware of ATM skimming devices.

Beware of card skimmers!

According to the FBI, it’s estimated that skimming costs financial institutions and consumers over $1 billion each year. The first reported card skimming device was in late 2002. Nearly two decades later, thieves continue to target unsuspecting cardholders at ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and other card readers. Criminals place tiny skimming devices to capture your card number and use a camera or keypad tracker to record your PIN. Information is later downloaded to create fraudulent cards.

Tips to protect yourself

  • Inspect the ATM or point-of-sale terminal. Grab the card reader. Skimming devices are typically attached with double-stick tape. If it’s loose, broken or comes off, don’t use it and alert the merchant or ATM owner
  • Always cover the pin pad while entering your PIN
  • Use an ATM or gas pump in a well-lit area or closer to the store
  • Monitor your accounts regularly. If you suspect any unauthorized activity, contact us immediately
