Before your next road trip, do the “penny tire test.” It’s a simple test that helps measure tire tread depth.
- Place your penny with President Lincoln’s head upside down into a tire tread groove
- If you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head, your tires are too worn out
- Repeat the test in several grooves of your tires: If you can always see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tire is worn below the 2/32” threshold and it’s time for a replacement!
For your home…
Summer is the best time for home improvement and taking care of those DIY projects you’ve been putting off. Some favorites include:
- Adding some fresh paint

1. Do your research
Buying a new car is a major purchase and can be overwhelming. Before you take that first test drive, do your homework online to narrow down your search to find THE vehicle you really want. Learn about all of the cool features you may or may not want to splurge on. Things to consider: price, features, styling, reliability, safety, and more.
2. Know your budget
Knowing how much you can or should spend is important. Experts recommend spending 10%-15% of your income on transportation (car payment, insurance, and fuel). For example, if your monthly take home pay is $5,000, then you should spend $500-$750 on transportation.
3. Get pre-approved
Getting pre-approved can help you set a realistic budget knowing how much you can borrow and at what interest rate. Use our auto loan calculator to estimate your monthly payment.
