WPCCU wishes you an exciting autumn. We’ve compiled some timely articles and must-do’s for this harvest season.

Heritage month

We are celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15 to October 15, WPCCU highlights National Hispanic Heritage Month honoring the ethnicities and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans. Since 1968, this was observed for a week which was started under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to cover a 30-day period which we continue to observe today.

Fraud

Don’t be a victim!

Understanding fraudster lingo, part 2

Fraud is the intentional use of deceit that results in personal or financial gain. We continue our series about fraudster lingo with some additional words below to help protect yourself against these scammers.

  • Phishing is a scam typically carried out through unsolicited email and/or websites posing as a legitimate site to lure unsuspecting victims to provide personal information.
  • Smishing is the same tactic as phishing through text messaging.
  • Spoofing occurs when a caller disguises their information on caller ID. The name or number appears as they’re calling as a certain person or business. Websites may also be spoofed.
  • Malware is “malicious software.” These are viruses, spyware, adware, and ransomware, intended to cause havoc and steal information from your computer/network.
  • Skimming is the practice of capturing the information from the magnetic strip of credit and debit cards
  • Vishing is short for Voice Phishing. Via recorded messages or live callers Fraudsters claim to be from a bank or government agency. The goal is to convince you to reveal personal information that can then be used for identity theft.
  • Malvertising is the use of online advertising with malicious code: Fraudsters insert malware into ads that is activated when you click on them. Be on the lookout and always think twice before clicking!
  • Brute-force attack is a hacking method to gain access by trying every possible combination of characters until correct.

Five tips to protect yourself:

  1. Ensure smart devices and computers have the latest operating system and security updates
  2. Ensure apps/applications have the latest updates from the Apple App Store or Google Play
  3. Install/keep antivirus software up-to-date on your computers to combat malware
  4. Regularly backup your computer files and smart devices
  5. Never carry your Social Security card or number in your wallet

Bonus tip:

Scammers want your money. They want access to your systems. Never give someone access to your devices that you don’t know. They’ll attempt to get you to share your credentials or ask you to download software to your device. Don’t do it. They could empty your bank accounts or even remotely wipe out your data.

As a reminder: Never give out your Social Security Number, Online/Mobile Banking login credentials, or any other personal information. WPCCU will never call or email you and ask for this information. If you suspect someone is attempting fraud against you, call us at 213-580-1600.
