Don't fall for scams!

Tips on how to avoid being scammed

Scammers are learning new tricks everyday but there are four telltale signs that a fraudster is trying to scam you:

  1. Fraudsters pretend to be from an organization you know: Scammers often impersonate officials from government agencies like the Social Security Administration, or IRS. They may also pose as familiar businesses like WPCCU or other credit unions.
  2. Fraudsters say there's either a problem or a prize: They may claim you have legal issues, owe money, or have a family emergency. They might warn of a virus on your computer, insist on verifying account details, or offer a fake a lottery win in return for a fee.
  3. Fraudsters pressure you to act now: Scammers pressure you into quick decisions and keep you on the line to block you from verifying their claims. They might even threaten you with arrest, legal action, deportation.
  4. Fraudsters ask you pay them in a very specific way: They often demand payment through rather unconventional methods like cryptocurrency, money wires, payment apps, or gift cards. Sometimes, they even send a fraudulent check, asking you to deposit it and forward the funds to them.

What you can do to stay safe:

  • Block unwanted calls and texts
  • Never share personal or financial details. Legitimate organizations won't ask for such information via calls, emails, or texts.
  • Don't give in to pressure: Reputable businesses allow time for informed decisions and won't pressure you to act immediately.
  • Stop and think, especially when asked for payment: Beware of anyone demanding payment via cryptocurrency, wire transfers, payment apps, or gift cards; and never deposit a check and then send the money back.
  • Consult someone you know and trust before taking any action to help recognize potential scams.

National Hispanic Heritage Month at WPCCU

From September 15 to October 15, WPCCU highlights National Hispanic Heritage Month honoring the ethnicities and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans. Since 1968, this was observed for a week which was started under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to cover a 30-day period which we continue to observe today.
